“0 Tai” is an interactive exhibition in which visitors explore the Beppu area and its surroundings using a map while receiving and listening to audio signals from satellite radios. The venue includes not only distinctive local terrains and spaces of Beppu but also places that were usually off-limits to the public. The radio audio is composed of field recordings, old found recordings, monologues and narrations by two actors, incorporating elements of readings and drama formats.
Furthermore, throughout the exhibition period, a film titled “0 Tai,” shot in the same venue, was screened in a site-specific format at a movie theater in Beppu. The film presents a narrative where current and past images intertwine, featuring the same two actors from the radio work and the film crew of a select few appearing on the screen.
“0 Tai” was created while searching for a way of creation through collaboration, when social distancing limited interpersonal interactions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For “0 Tai,” the focus is on the “place” itself rather than the created artwork, a recurring theme in Umeda’s works. In 2021, a book with the same title was published, and some parts of the radio artwork are still accessible for the experience now.
